History

Diggle Mill was an extensive woollen textile mill complex comprising a mill house, wheelhouse, spinning block and single storey storage sheds. Located in close proximity to Diggle Brook and some 50ft higher up from the mill is a mill pond. Built between 1845-1847 by William Broadbent, the site was initially a water powered mill which later added steam power. The waterwheel was dismantled in 1924 with the mill closing 10 years later.
 
The first mention of Diggle Mill on the Census Returns was in 1986 where at least twenty people were shown as living at the mill, all engaged in jobs connected to the woollen cloth production. Around 1871 the mill was taken over by G. Lawton and Sons, where wool manufacturing continued. By the end of the 19th century, the mill was shown as containing 10,608 spindles and 138 looms which increased slightly over the next thirty years when by 1925 capacity was at 11,000 spindles and 170 looms.
 
In 1924 the waterwheel was dismantled and between 1935-1971 the structure of the mill has begun to decline and became unsafe. The top two floors and loft were removed and the structure was re-roofed. In the late 20th century the open courtyard formed by the single storey weaving sheds and the mill was roofed over, forming a single storey high room that was fitted with an overhead crane running the full length of the mill. Beyond this new tall room a stone footed structure with corrugated metal clad walls was constructed, around 1995, and attached to the southern gable of the mill and the mill was converted to sheet metal processing.
 
Following the closure of the mill, the site was extensively redeveloped into residential properties, forming a small collection of townhouses and apartments.
